There are few things I love more than taking a photograph of someone. From family to strangers, there is always something to learn from the subject. It is one of the most bold statements in art. The photographer is stating to the subject… this is how I see you. It is my vision of you… from MY viewpoint.
And if the image is good, really good, the subject sees something in the photograph that reminds them of something they knew about themselves but hadn’t been able to see. A mirror back to them of what or who they really are.
Creating a style within the portraiture arena is a very difficult thing to do. From celebrities to real life to kids and families, the photograph of our fellow travelers always seems to compel… and there are so many great photographers who make wonderful – and insightful – images of people.
Dan Winters
Victor Skrebneski
Josef Karsh
These three have been such favorites of mine… masters of old, masters of the new. I like the work of Jake Chessum as well, although it is a bit too ‘celebrity’ oriented for me.
I also recommend that you look at the great painters of old… study them and how they used light… created not by a flash, but by their minds eye. It is a very ‘enlightening’ thing to behold.
Meet my bud Kirk Tuck. He lives in Austin. Austin is in Texas. He has opinions. And he shares them on forums and through the four books he has written on photography.
We decided to have a chat about ‘style’ something both of us have been thinking a lot about lately… and from a bit of a different perspective. Now here’s the thing… we chatted for over an hour – and you get it all on this post… the whole hour and 10 minutes or so. Pull up a chair and listen to what he has to say about style – then see the images below for a glimpse into the work of Kirk Tuck. Oh, he has a blog too.
It was a lot of fun chatting with Kirk. Audio File Here. We hope you have a good listen. Grab a cold whatever you like and enjoy the next hour.
