FREE WORKSHOP ASSIGNMENT FOUR: SPLASH SHOTS

LET YOUR IMAGINATION GET WET AND SPLASHY!

Welcome to the free workshop. This module is from my 8 Week Splash Class.

Adding a splash of water or some kind of liquid to an otherwise simple product shot is one way contemporary photographers are spicing up the good old product shot.

Ans while the setup of lighting may very similar, getting that splash of water to be visible will take some very careful placement. We need light to see the splash, and we need the splash to have some density where it counts so as to show the liquid in a beautifully frozen state.

We also have to take into account how we are going to mount the product. Throwing voluminous amounts of water at it may knock it down unless it is a car battery or a 14-pound watermelon.

Choosing whether to hide the mounting apparatus from the camera is your call…. but remember that it cannot go behind the splash or we will see it through the liquid and that won’t work.

Gaffer’s’ tape (a different brand) can come in quite handy for this sort of operation. While not totally waterproof, it should hold for many a wet hour.

Be sure you bring an extra dose of patience to the project. You may have to splash that thing 10, 20, 80 times to get the splash you want. OR you may have to crank up your composite skills to get the multiple splashes working for you.

The video below shows some wonderful “outta the box” approaches to this kind of product shooting.

Let your imagination run wild and let’s see what you come up with.

(Do not forget that the floor can get messy. Small kiddie pools have saved many a floor, carpet, and relationships… just sayin’.)

DECONSTRUCTING SOME SPLASH IMAGES

DECONSTRUCTING SOME SPLASH IMAGES
(These are not my photos, they are being used for deconstruction tutorial use and I am discussing ways they COULD have been done, not how they were actually shot. There are many ways to build a splash shot. From one shot to dozens to be composited. You must find your own methods that you like.)

You are going to need one of these if you like doing splash shots.
