Colorado Fall Color Workshop
A roadtrip adventure for visual creatives. September 29 through October 4, 2019.
A UNIQUE WORKSHOP FOR STILL AND MOTION PHOTOGRAPHERS
This will be an amazing experience, one that may be a once in a lifetime trip. The last week of September is often Peak Color in the area we are going to spend our time. I rode this area last year to scout the locations and was simply blown away by the experience. Some views look like the forest is on fire, and the vistas from the tops of the high passes simply take your breath away.
We will begin by meeting in Denver early on September 29, so plan on getting in on the 28th. I will provide some hotel info for you, and we will pick up everyone and be in the mountains and shooting by noon on Saturday. The workshop fee includes all ground transportation, National Park Fees, and hotel rooms. Breakfasts will be provided by the hotels. Lunches and dinners will be up to you as well as any adult beverages. We will furnish bottled water and soft drinks during the workshop.
We begin in Black Hawk, Colorado and will spend the afternoon shooting the unique villages of Central City and Idaho Springs. Day 2 we take the “Peak to Peak Highway” which certainly lives up to its name. We will wander through Nederland on our way to Estes Park. From there we start up the mountain to the staggering altitudes of Rocky Mountain National Park. Lunch in the clouds and on the tundra of 12,000 plus feet. We spend the night in Grand Lake, CO, on the west side of the Rocky Mountains.
Day 3 takes us through Berthoud Falls and over Loveland Pass on our way to Leadville. This path goes through Frisco and into one of the most colorful passes in the area. After a night in Leadville, an old mining town the highest incorporated town in the US, day 4 finds us heading up the mountains for Aspen. Big Lake and Independence Pass await as we climb to the top of the peaks where the view is simply incredible. Day 5 takes us to Buena Vista (back over Independence Pass… don’t worry, it is just as incredible the second time) where we will spend the night in the presence of the “Fourteens” – an entire range of mountains to the west of us all 14,000 feet or higher. We then decide if we want to go back through Loveland Pass to Denver or try a different route more to the east. We will let the color decide.
What to expect.
We will be at very high altitudes at many points on the trip. RMNP, Independence Pass, Loveland Pass… all at over or near 12,000 feet. This means it may be much colder at the top than expected, so cold weather gear is important. We will have time to explore and hike, so hiking boots or equivalent is also a necessity. We will not be doing anything dangerous or risky other than the normal risks one takes when we walk on the planet. A list of things to consider will be sent to each participant. We can also not control the weather. Most of the time it is pretty good during this week, but sometimes it isn’t. What happens then? We roll with it and make images of inclement weather… the environment is not always what we want it to be, but it is always spectacular in any event.
Visual storytelling with still images and video for maximum impact.
Our focus will be on creating stories and examining the visual narrative as well as the purely visual grandeur that is Colorado at this amazing time of year.
We stay in a different hotel each night (mid-range, experiential hotels. That means clean, comfortable, but with a little something special for us to enjoy. From majestic views to rustic architecture, the motels will be a great place to relax, set up laptops and learn the ins and outs of editing.
Dinners will be healthy and together. Enjoying a meal together at the end of the day makes a strong bond stronger.
We are working to keep the fee affordable and we are also limiting the participation to only 4 photographers… so it will fill fast.
We will be visiting many of the beautiful Colorado Mountain Towns
From Idaho Springs to Estes Park, then to Grand Lake and Granby, We go through Berthoud Falls to Frisco over Loveland Pass, to Leadville, Aspen and Twin Lakes. The trip over Independence Pass is amazing, and we top it off with the color of the Peak to Peak route.
We will spend some time in as many of these incredible little towns as possible. The flavor of the Colorado Wilderness is reflected so much in places like Leadville, Idaho Springs, and Granby. Aspen is absolutely gorgeous while Nederland is a mountain delight. And just wait till you see the photographic possibilities in Georgetown.
Rocky Mountain National Park in the Fall is Incredible
We will have plenty of time to shoot the color on both sides of the park as we journey to the top from the east and depart to the west toward Grand Lake. The view from the top is spectacular and we will be doing a bit of hiking there.
We will have lunch at the top, and plenty of time to make images of both the tundra and the amazing vistas that surround us on the peak.
It can be cold on the top of this mountain, even in the summer. So be prepared for anything – even snow… it can happen.
Our goal is for you to make incredible photographs and a beautiful video of your experience.

Former Workshop Attendees
In 2015, I had the pleasure of joining one of Don Giannatti’s Famous P52 Road Trips, where I met Don and several of the other group members. It was the most amazing week visiting the beautiful canyonlands of Arizona and Utah and traveling along with wonderful photographers from the community. There were lots of laughs and lots of photography.
It is wonderful to share an experience like that with friends who have the same interests. When someone in the van shouts “Oh, look at that cool fence!”. We stop, get out of the van and admire and make images of a fence — agreeing that the texture is amazing — before moving on to the next interesting light, texture, old building or beautiful view that someone notices. We learn to see differently, and our horizons expand when we see through the eyes of others.
The way I see it, Project 52 isn’t just workshops about commercial photography — it is Community! Led by Don Giannatti the community is one of the most supportive, honest and fun places to learn photography. None of us ever stops learning.
“Don Giannatti’s workshops improved my technical skills to a professional level, helped me discover where my best work lies but most importantly provided a positive continuing support system so I can accomplish my career goals.”
“Transformation is what I experienced with Don’s workshops. It opened my eyes, challenged my definition of failure, made me a better marketer, a better photographer and created a thriving business boost.
“I loved the photos I came home with from the 2019 Roadtrip with Don Giannatti and other students! Winter is the perfect time to avoid the crowds and take advantage of the low-angled light. Don knows the ins and outs, and the highways and back roads. Go once and you’ll definitely want to go again!”
